A Musical Shraddhanjali by Swar Sagarika

Date: 9 Jan 2004

Venue: Iskcon Hall, Juhu

Theme: To co-memorate 1st Death Anniversary of the Legend.

A musical tribute was arranged for veteran lyricist and Urdu poet the late Shri Qamar Jalalabadi on Friday 9th January 2004, at the ISKCON auditorium, Hare Krishna Land, Juhu.

The program was presented by his daughter Subhashini Sheopori; a free-lance journalist and E-Content writer, under her own banner SWAR SAGARIKA. It was a memorable evening for vintage music lovers who attended the show, as they paid their respects to the lyrical memory of a legendary writer of the bygone era.

                                               Jasvindar Singh

The nostalgic evening began with three heart touching ghazals of Qamar Jalalabadi rendered with amazing versatility by a budding young Ghazal singer Jasvindar Singh. Songs from films like ‘Howrah Bridge’ - ‘Mera Naam Chin Chin Choo’ rubbed shoulders with songs from the evergreen film ‘Chhalia’, “Mere Toote Huye Dilse’ and ‘Teri Rahon Me Khade Hain”. The special highlights were an effervescent sad ditty from the film ‘Himalay Ki God Me’, ‘Mai to ik khwab hoon…’and a comic song from the film ‘Pehli Taarikh’, ‘khush hai zamana aaj pehli taarikh hai’which had a most refreshing effect on the audience.

But more than the musical program, it was an emotional ride through the dusty archives of the music world where great men are forgotten even while they are alive. It was an extremely emotional moment for Subhashini while she addressed the audience and disclosed to all present how her Ladies Group, Swar Sagarika had pledged to preserve vintage songs and names of lyricists of the past. She implored listeners to join her group and contribute in any way they could. The audience was mostly a conglomerate of invitees, relatives and good friends.

It has been planned to have a show of this stature every year in memory of the gentle and philosophic writer, Qamar Jalalabadi. On their end every year, SWAR SAGARIKA will seek fresh and budding talent for presenting his songs.
